Generative AI 101: A Practical Guide for the Modern Lawyer

Put Generative AI to Work for Your Practice

Thursday, December 4, 2025

2:00pm
WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION
2:10pm
WHAT IS GENERATIVE AI?

Generative AI refers to technology that can produce text, images, code and other content based on prompts. It represents a major shift in how we interact with machines, allowing professionals to brainstorm ideas, automate routine tasks, and accelerate their workflow. Embracing this technology is essential, not to replace people, but to enhance decision-making, improve efficiency, and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

2:20pm
RISKS AND CAPABILITIES

We'll explore the potential risks of generative AI, including AI hallucinations (where the system generates false or misleading information), AI bias (inherited from training data) and the significant concern of unintentionally training models on your confidential data. We'll also discuss strategies to mitigate these risks.

2:35pm
GEN AI GUIDELINES AND PROMPT ENGINEERING

We’ll outline the steps that intermediate and advanced users followed early on, so everyone can speed up their learning of these techniques and apply them with greater confidence. We'll begin by exploring how generative AI tools "think." They don’t understand language the way humans do, but instead analyze patterns in massive datasets to predict the most likely next word or output based on your input. Understanding this helps users frame instructions in ways the AI is more likely to interpret correctly. We'll then dive into creating top-level prompts, breaking down techniques for clarity, specificity, and tone, and show how even small adjustments to phrasing can significantly impact results.

2:50pm
ETHICAL USE OF GENERATIVE AI

We’ll highlight the ABA’s stance, which stresses the importance of competence, confidentiality and supervision when using generative AI. The ABA encourages lawyers to stay informed about emerging technologies and ensure they do not compromise client data or rely on AI-generated outputs without proper verification. One of the biggest pitfalls we’re seeing is lawyers submitting AI-generated content, such as case citations or filings, without adequate fact-checking, sometimes resulting in fictitious or inaccurate legal references. We’ll discuss how to avoid these mistakes by treating AI as a research assistant, not a final authority, and by building in checkpoints for human review.

3:20pm
LEADERSHIP IN AI ADOPTION

We’ll also explore how legal leaders are establishing internal policies, training programs and AI usage guidelines to promote responsible adoption across their firms. These initiatives aim to ensure compliance with ethical standards, reduce risk, and build organizational competence in using generative AI effectively. By taking these proactive steps, firms are not only minimizing liability but also positioning themselves to get the most out of these tools. This includes unlocking efficiencies, enhancing client service, and fostering innovation in day-to-day legal practice.

3:25pm
KEY TOOLS FOR LAWYERS AND CLOSING Q&A

Lastly, we'll share some must-know tools that every lawyer should have on their radar, which will be a combination of legal-focused generative AI platforms and broader productivity-enhancing tools that can be adapted to legal workflows.
